2024 Horse of the Year and
2024 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly
Thorpedo Anna, a remarkable dark bay filly trained by Kenneth McPeek, captivated the racing world in 2024 with her impressive record of 8 wins from 10 starts and total earnings of $3,843,663. She triumphed in prestigious races including the Grade I Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, and the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Bred in Kentucky by Judy Hicks, Thorpedo Anna is out of an Uncle Mo mare and hails from a lineage that produced the notable Eskendereya. Her victories not only made her a fan favorite but also made history alongside trainer McPeek, who achieved the unique double of winning both the Derby and Oaks in the same year.
Thorpedo Anna was the brilliant champion filly of 2024, a powerful gray who ran herself to Horse of the Year honors with one of the finest sophomore campaigns by a filly in modern memory. She was foaled in 2021, a daughter of the young Kentucky stallion Fast Anna. She raced in a partnership of small share owners that included Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, Magdalena Racing, and Judy Hicks, and she was trained by Kenny McPeek, the same horseman who had developed Swiss Skydiver four years earlier. Brian Hernandez Jr. rode her to most of her biggest wins.
Thorpedo Anna opened her three year old year by signaling a special season ahead. She rolled to a powerful win in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs the day before the Kentucky Derby, giving Kenny McPeek an Oaks and Derby double as he also won the Run for the Roses with Mystik Dan the next day. She kept right on rolling through the summer with smart wins in the Acorn Stakes at Saratoga and the Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing, beating top three year old fillies wherever she ran.
The crowning moment of her year came at the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in November 2024. Thorpedo Anna stepped up against the very best older mares in the country in the Breeders' Cup Distaff and rolled home a clear winner under Brian Hernandez Jr. It was the kind of performance that left no doubt about who was the best female runner of the season. The win made her career earnings climb past $4 million and gave Kenny McPeek another Breeders' Cup trophy.
For her brilliant year, Thorpedo Anna was named the 2024 Eclipse Award Horse of the Year, becoming the first three year old filly to win that title since Rachel Alexandra back in 2009. She was also crowned Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Thorpedo Anna is remembered as a true crossover star, a filly who beat the best of her age and then took down the older mares as well, and as a horse who delivered one of the great championship seasons of the modern era.
