2004 Wood Memorial Stakes winner
Tapit was a brilliantly talented gray colt whose racing career was cut short, only for him to become arguably the most influential American stallion of the 21st century. He was foaled in 2001, a son of the stallion Pulpit out of the Unbridled mare Tap Your Heels. He was bred by Mike and Tina Pegram, and his racing career was campaigned by Ron Winchell and Gainesway in partnership. He was conditioned by the eccentric British born trainer Michael Dickinson, the inventive horseman best known for sweeping the top five places in a famous English steeplechase years before.
Tapit flashed huge talent right from the start. He won the Laurel Futurity as a two year old and then captured the prestigious Wood Memorial as a three year old in 2004, putting himself among the favorites for the Kentucky Derby. A lung infection slowed him just before the big race, and although Michael Dickinson allowed him to start anyway, Tapit never showed his best on the first Saturday in May, finishing ninth behind Smarty Jones. The illness took a real toll, and after one more start that summer he was retired with a record of three wins from six starts.
What he could not finish on the racetrack he more than made up for in the breeding shed. Tapit went to stud at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and quickly became the dominant American stallion of his generation. He topped the North American leading sire list multiple times and at his peak commanded a stud fee of $300,000, the highest in the country for several years running. His sons and daughters won race after race at the highest level, and his name became a household word among breeders and racing fans alike.
The list of his stakes winners reads like a roll call of the best horses of the past two decades. Tapit sired Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist, Creator, and Tapwrit, along with champions like Untapable, Stardom Bound, Frosted, Constitution, Essential Quality, and the brilliant unbeaten Flightline. His sire line has carried forward through sons like Constitution, who himself sired 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty. Tapit is remembered as a horse whose own racing days were cut short but whose impact on American thoroughbred breeding may never be matched in his lifetime.
