2024 Preakness Stakes Winner

Seize the Grey, a champion thoroughbred, captured the 2024 Preakness Stakes, solidifying his legacy. Bred by Jamm Ltd. and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, this remarkable colt has career earnings of $2,425,938 and retired to stud at Gainesway Farm.

Seize The Grey gave the racing world one of the most heartwarming stories of 2024 when he carried his legendary 88 year old trainer back into the Triple Crown winner's circle. He was foaled in 2021, a gray colt by the late great Arrogate out of the mare Smart Shopping. He was owned by MyRacehorse, a microshare company that lets thousands of regular fans own small pieces of racehorses, in partnership with Resolute Racing. The man training him was none other than D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Fame horseman who has been winning big races since before most of his rivals were born.

Seize The Grey first caught the public eye on Kentucky Derby Day 2024 when he splashed home to win the Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs over a sloppy track. With young jockey Jaime Torres in the irons, the gray colt showed he loved the wet going. That set the stage for the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico two weeks later, where he would face Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan. Once again the skies opened up and the track turned to mud.

The 149th running of the Preakness Stakes played right into Seize The Grey's strengths. He took the lead from the gate and never gave it back, splashing through the slop and holding off the closing Mystik Dan to win by a couple of lengths. The victory made D. Wayne Lukas the oldest trainer ever to win a Triple Crown race, capping a career that already included 14 such wins. The trainer pumped his fist and grinned as the colt crossed the wire, a moment racing fans will not soon forget.

Seize The Grey could not repeat the magic in the Belmont Stakes, finishing well back in the field. But that did not dim what he had given the sport. He proved that a horse with grit and a love of mud could beat the best of his class, and he handed his beloved trainer one more shining day in the sun. For MyRacehorse owners and racing fans alike, the gray colt's Preakness will stand as one of the feel good stories of the decade.
