2004 Eclipse Award Champion Female Turf Horse
Riskaverse was a classy bay mare who became one of the most consistent grass runners in North America during the early 2000s. She was foaled in 1999, a daughter of the great turf sire Dynaformer. She raced under the conditioning of veteran New York horseman Patrick Kelly, who patiently developed her into a Grade 1 winner across multiple seasons. With her smooth stride and steady temperament, Riskaverse built her career on the green courses of Keeneland, Belmont Park, and Saratoga.
Riskaverse announced her arrival at the top level as a three year old in 2002. That season she captured the Sands Point Stakes at Belmont Park and then traveled to Keeneland to win her first Grade 1, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, against the best three year old fillies on grass in the country. She also tackled the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf that year, the first of four straight appearances she would make in that championship event for Patrick Kelly.
Her finest achievements came as an older mare in 2004 and 2005, when she did something no other horse had ever done. She won the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park in back to back years, an accomplishment that stood alone in the history of that race for a long time. The wins confirmed her as one of the leading older turf females in the country. She kept showing up against the very best in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, where the longer distance never quite played to her strengths but where she always ran hard.
Riskaverse retired with earnings of more than $2 million, three Grade 1 wins, and a reputation as one of the toughest grass mares of her era. She went on to be a broodmare in retirement, passing along her Dynaformer stamina and Grade 1 class. Riskaverse is remembered as a trainer's dream, the kind of consistent and talented runner who showed up year after year and rewarded the patience of her connections at the highest level of the sport.
