2025 Metropolitan Handicap Winner
Raging Torrent was a hard charging dark bay who turned into one of the most exciting older horses in racing during 2024 and 2025. He was foaled in 2021, a son of the young sire Maximus Mischief out of his dam by way of breeders Rodney J. Winkler and Alfonso Mazetti. He was trained throughout his career by Doug O'Neill, the same horseman who saddled Kentucky Derby winners I'll Have Another and Nyquist. Late in his career, he was campaigned for Yuesheng Zhang's Yulong operation and Craig Dado.
Raging Torrent loved going to the lead, and he had the speed to back it up. He capped his three year old season at the end of 2024 with his first Grade 1 win in the Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita, where he defeated Mystik Dan, the Kentucky Derby winner from earlier that year. Before that he had also won the Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar, putting himself on the map as a top sprinter and miler. By the start of his four year old year, he was being mentioned as one of the leading older horses in training.
The biggest performances were yet to come. Raging Torrent traveled all the way to Dubai in early 2025 and rolled to a smart win in the Godolphin Mile at Meydan, beating top international competition. Back home that summer, he closed out his career in spectacular fashion by capturing the Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga, leading every step of the way and stamping a 106 Beyer Speed Figure. He defeated a star studded field that included champion two year old Fierceness and 2024 Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio.
Raging Torrent retired with seven wins from 14 starts and earnings of just under $1.8 million. He was sent to Lane's End Farm in Kentucky to stand at stud, joining the bluegrass elite as a fresh young Grade 1 stallion prospect. He is remembered for his pure front running speed and the way he stretched his form into the very biggest races, making both Doug O'Neill and his Yulong ownership group justifiably proud.
