2023 Kentucky Derby Winner
Mage was the brilliant longshot who captured the 2023 Kentucky Derby in just his fourth career start. He was foaled in 2020 and trained by Gustavo Delgado for a partnership of OGMA Investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing, and CMNWLTH Stable. His sire was the 2017 champion two year old Good Magic, a son of Curlin, and his dam was Puca, a daughter of Big Brown. He was a regally bred chestnut colt and a full brother to Dornoch, who would later win the 2024 Belmont Stakes.
Mage raced sparingly. He broke his maiden in his second career start at Gulfstream Park in early 2023 and then ran second in the Florida Derby, earning enough qualifying points for a spot in the Kentucky Derby field. He went into the 2023 Kentucky Derby as a 15 to 1 longshot, with most of the attention on horses like Forte, who was scratched the morning of the race after a bruised foot.
The 2023 Kentucky Derby turned into a wild affair. With Forte out and a deep field of 18 horses going to the post on a cool May afternoon, Mage sat in midpack under jockey Javier Castellano. He swung four wide turning for home and powered down the stretch to catch Two Phil's in the final yards, winning by a length in a thrilling finish. The win gave Castellano his first Kentucky Derby trophy after sixteen tries, made Gustavo Delgado a classic winning trainer, and gave the partnership of mostly first time owners the racing thrill of a lifetime.
Mage ran in the 2023 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico but was caught late and finished third behind National Treasure. He was retired soon after due to a soft tissue issue. He finished his career with 2 wins from 8 starts and earnings of over 2 million dollars. He went to stud at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky for his first season at stud. Mage is remembered for one of the great longshot stories in Kentucky Derby history and as the colt who started a remarkable run of classic glory for his family, with brother Dornoch following him to a Triple Crown win the very next year.
