Winner of the 2025 Preakness Stakes

Journalism is a brilliant champion of 2025 and one of the most exciting young horses on the American scene. He was foaled in 2022 and is trained by Michael McCarthy for his ownership group of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Don Alberto Stable, Bridlewood Farm, Robert LaPenta, and Elayne Stables. His sire is the great two time Horse of the Year Curlin, and his dam is Mopotism, a Grade 1 placed daughter of Uncle Mo. He was purchased as a yearling for 825,000 dollars at the 2023 Fasig Tipton Saratoga Select Sale and quickly proved he was worth every penny.

Journalism showed his class as a two year old in 2024 with a powerful win in the Los Alamitos Futurity. He came back as a three year old and ran off three straight wins on the West Coast Triple Crown trail. He took the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in dominating fashion and then won the 2025 Santa Anita Derby, locking up his spot at Churchill Downs as one of the favorites. By the time he shipped east, he had collected 137.5 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, more than any other horse in the field.

The 2025 Kentucky Derby was a wild and rainy affair. Journalism, ridden by jockey Umberto Rispoli, ran a brave race after a wide trip and finished second behind Sovereignty by just over a length. Many fans thought he had run a winning race against bad weather and a tough trip. Two weeks later, the connections of Sovereignty decided to skip the Preakness Stakes, opening the door for Journalism to grab a classic of his own.

The 2025 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico belonged to Journalism. Sent off as the favorite, he ran a professional, controlled race under Umberto Rispoli and powered home to beat Gosger and Sandman, claiming the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. The win gave Michael McCarthy his first Triple Crown race victory and stamped Journalism as a true classic horse. He continues to train and run at the highest level. Journalism is remembered as one of the great stars of the 2025 racing season, a son of Curlin carrying his sire's heart and class to the very top of the sport.
