2018 Eclipse Award Champion Two-Year-Old Filly
Jaywalk was a brilliant filly who stormed through the 2018 racing season to become the Eclipse Award Champion Two Year Old Filly. She was foaled in 2016 and trained by John Servis, the conditioner who had won the 2004 Triple Crown opener with Smarty Jones. She was owned by Cash is King LLC and D. J. Stable. Her sire was Cross Traffic, the 2013 Whitney Handicap winner, and her dam was Lady Pewitt, a daughter of Orientate.
Jaywalk showed her brilliance right out of the gate as a two year old. She broke her maiden at Parx Racing in dominant fashion and quickly stepped up in class. She picked up her first stakes win at Delaware Park, then shipped to Belmont Park and won the Frizette Stakes by 5 and a quarter lengths over a top field of two year old fillies. The win stamped her as the leader of her division heading into the Breeders Cup.
The 2018 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs was her crowning moment. Jaywalk, ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, drew off through the stretch to win by 5 and a half lengths in pouring rain. The dominant effort sealed the championship. At year end, she was named the 2018 Eclipse Award Champion Two Year Old Filly, the top honor for any filly her age.
Her three year old season did not go as planned. Jaywalk ran in the 2019 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs but finished off the board behind Serengeti Empress. She tried other major races but never quite regained her two year old form. She was sold at the 2019 Fasig Tipton November sale for 3.4 million dollars to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm. She retired with 4 wins from 11 starts and earnings of over 1.5 million dollars. Jaywalk went on to a career as a broodmare. She is remembered as a brilliant juvenile champion who lit up the fall of 2018 and gave John Servis and her connections one unforgettable championship season.
