Groupie Doll was a brilliant sprinter and a back to back champion who became one of the most popular fillies of her time. She was foaled in 2008 and trained by William "Buff" Bradley, who also co owned her along with Brent Burns and his father Fred Bradley, a Kentucky state senator. Her sire was Bowman's Band, a regional Kentucky sire, and her dam was Deputy Doll, a daughter of Deputy Commander. She came from modest connections and proved that you do not need a blue blood pedigree to reach the top.
Groupie Doll put together a remarkable career as a four and five year old. She had blazing speed and a strong finishing kick, and she handled both fast tracks and off going with ease. Her championship run started in 2012 with a powerful win in the Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby day. She added other graded stakes wins through the summer and headed to Santa Anita for the biggest race of her career.
The 2012 Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was her showcase. Groupie Doll drew off to win by five and a half lengths in dominating fashion, beating the best sprint mares in the country. She earned the 2012 Eclipse Award for Champion Female Sprinter. She came back as a five year old in 2013 and did it all again, winning the 2013 Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita and earning her second straight Eclipse Award as Champion Female Sprinter. She is one of only a few mares to win the Filly and Mare Sprint twice.
After her championship campaigns, Groupie Doll was sold at the 2013 Keeneland November sale for 3.1 million dollars to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm. She retired with 11 wins from 25 starts and earnings of over 2.6 million dollars. She has gone on to a career as a broodmare and produced runners of her own. Groupie Doll is remembered as the small farm filly who beat the best in the world, a true champion with heart and speed who gave the Bradley family the racing thrill of a lifetime.
