Dornoch was a top three year old of 2024 who delivered a classic win at one of the most unusual editions of an American Triple Crown race. He was foaled in 2021 and trained by Danny Gargan for a partnership that included West Paces Racing, R. A. Hill Stable, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Pine Racing Stables, and the LeMaitre Family Trust. His sire was Good Magic, the 2017 champion two year old colt and a son of Curlin, and his dam was Puca, a daughter of Big Brown. That made him a full brother to Mage, who had won the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

Dornoch showed his class as a two year old in 2023 by winning the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct, a Grade 2 stakes for two year olds. He came into his three year old year as one of the top contenders on the Triple Crown trail. He ran in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Florida Derby, and he finished tenth in the 2024 Kentucky Derby.

The big day came in June 2024. The 2024 Belmont Stakes was held at Saratoga Race Course because Belmont Park was being rebuilt, making it the first time the race had been run away from its traditional home in many years. The race was also run at a shorter distance of one and one quarter miles instead of the usual mile and a half. Dornoch, ridden by jockey Luis Saez, ran a smart race from off the pace and surged late to win by a half length over Mindframe. The win gave trainer Danny Gargan his first classic, and it made Dornoch and Mage a rare set of full brothers to win Triple Crown races.

After his big win, Dornoch continued to compete at the top level. He retired to stud with a strong record and a great pedigree to offer the next generation. Dornoch is remembered as the winner of the unique Saratoga Belmont Stakes and as a horse who carried his family's classic talent to the very top.
