February 22 - Covfefe
You loved her on the track, you love her a broodmare, she is the beautiful, the athletic daughter of super sire Into Mischief, a personal favorite (I need Michael Buffer to do this part) COVFEFE.
She was raced by the Roth family's LNJ Foxwood's Stable and is still owned by the Roths.
I've painted her twice on the track. One painting went to Jamie and the other went to her parents. Then, Jamie wanted to get a painting of her with her first foal. Okay. Then she wanted another one for her parents with that foal, then one for each of her bloodstock advisors. That was three more but each time I did one of Covfefe with her baby, Jamie wanted it and I had to do another one. About nine paintings later, I think I know not only every muscle on that horse, but every piece of fur as well.
Some horses, you just can't get enough of and this beauty falls into that category. When you are a wide-eyed horse crazy kid that just wants to draw and paint horses - THIS IS THE TYPE OF HORSE YOU DREAM ABOUT . . . check that . . . THIS IS THE HORSE YOU DREAM ABOUT . . .
I love horses, I love painting horses, and it can't get any better than working with owners who love their horses with the same passion that I have as an artist!
Covfefe was a flashy and fast filly who lit up the sprint division in 2019 and earned an Eclipse Award for her efforts. She was foaled in 2016 and trained by Brad Cox for owners LNJ Foxwoods. Her sire was the leading stallion Into Mischief, and her dam was Antics, a daughter of Unusual Heat. Her name came from a famous typo, but there was nothing accidental about her talent on the racetrack.
Covfefe was a runner who showed early speed and just kept on rolling. She made her name at three years old in 2019 with a string of impressive wins. She took the Test Stakes at Saratoga that summer in dominant fashion, beating other top three year old fillies. She followed that up with a win in the Princess Rooney Handicap and the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland. Her trainer Brad Cox then pointed her at the biggest sprint race of the year for fillies and mares.
The 2019 Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was held at Santa Anita that fall. Covfefe went off as one of the favorites and ran a beautiful race, taking the lead early and holding off all challengers down the stretch. The win sealed her championship season. At the end of the year, Covfefe was named the 2019 Eclipse Award winner for Champion Female Sprinter. She earned just over 1.1 million dollars in her racing career.
After her brilliant racing days, Covfefe was retired to become a broodmare. She was sold for 5.5 million dollars at the 2019 Fasig Tipton November sale, one of the highest prices for a racing or broodmare prospect that year. She is now part of the breeding world, and her offspring carry on the legacy of one of the fastest fillies of her generation.
