The 2020 Kentucky Derby was unlike any in the race's long history — run on the first Saturday in September instead of May, beneath empty grandstands, with the world rearranged by a pandemic — and the horse who won it suited the strangeness of the moment perfectly. Authentic was a fast, front-running bay colt who, by the end of his three-year-old season, had stamped himself one of the more accomplished classic winners of the modern era. Foaled in 2017 in Kentucky, he was sired by Into Mischief, the Spendthrift stallion who has dominated the leading sire list in recent seasons, out of the Mr. Greeley mare Flawless, a graded stakes winner. Sent to Bob Baffert to train and carrying the silks of a partnership headed by Spendthrift Farm, MyRacehorse, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing, he gave thousands of small-share owners a Kentucky Derby winner of their own.
His three-year-old campaign was a study in front-end class. He won the San Felipe (G2) and Sham (G3) at Santa Anita, lost a memorable head-bob to Honor A. P. in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), and rebounded with a dominant Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth. Then came Churchill Downs, where he wired the field in the Kentucky Derby, holding off the heavily favored Tiz the Law to win in 2:00.61 — the fastest Derby since Monarchos in 2001 and the seventh-fastest in the race's history. He lost the Preakness narrowly to filly Swiss Skydiver in another head-bob photo, and then closed his career in spectacular style at Keeneland, leading every step of the way to take the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) by 2¼ lengths in 1:59.60, breaking the track record set by American Pharoah five years earlier and posting the fastest Classic on dirt since Ghostzapper in 2004. He was named 2020 Horse of the Year and Champion Three-Year-Old Male.
He retired at season's end to Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, where he entered stud at a $75,000 fee and quickly emerged as one of the most commercially successful first-crop sires of his generation, with his early runners earning him repeated leading-freshman-sire honors and producing graded stakes winners almost immediately. Authentic's racing record finishes at six wins from eight starts and earnings north of $7 million, but the deeper measure of him is the way he ran: in front, on his terms, with a pace and a stride that the very best couldn't quite reach. He fit his name.
